Hunters Point Shipyard Hillpoint Park: A Room With a View
San Francisco, CA
Lead Landscape Architect: Kevin Conger, FASLA
Client: FivePoint and the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure
Hillpoint Park is the first major open space in the transformation of the 500-acre Hunters Point Shipyard into a new mixed use neighborhood in the Bayview District of San Francisco. The park is located on a promontory situated 90 feet above the historic industrial shipyard with sweeping waterfront views. The design is bold and apparently restrained; an intervention into the landscape that amplifies the prospect of the site and creates a compelling choreography of the views through rotating orientations, multiple sculptural seating elements, and a dramatic overlook structure that is experienced as a prow at the tip of the promontory. Although the tilted lawn feels entirely at home facing the waterfront, the grading to create it was quite aggressive and necessary to nest the lawn into the hillside. Universal accessibility was paramount and the entire site is accessible without creating a single ramp, again with the intention of not letting the technical design get in the way of the experience of the site.
