Tuesday, February 21, 2017 5:00PM | Conference Call

Chair: Chris Pattillo
Recorder: Cate Bainton
Present: Cate Bainton, Cathy Garrett, Chris Pattillo, Fred Rachman, Janet Gracyk, Melissa Mourkas

Minutes

  1. Sonoma County Tour, Saturday, April 22

Betsy, the tour leader, will discuss this with Chris, Cathy, and Janet.

  2. UC Berkeley Student HALS projects status

Last year, UC Berkeley students partially documented 5 sites for HALS Heroes. PGAdesign staff has completed 4 of the 5 projects and sent them to Chris Stevens for review. Fred will complete field work on the Cohen-Bray Garden when weather permits.

  3. 2017 HALS Challenge

The theme for this year's HALS Challenge is City or Town Parks. If a park that interests you is larger than your time permits, consider documenting a discrete sub-portion of the park.

  4. HALS National Report

Chris summarized the quarterly conference call of ASLA Historic Preservation PPN held on January 17:

    • Paul Dolinsky reported that the update to the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for Historic Preservation is out for public review. There may be a delay due to the change in administration.
    • 732 sites in the United States and elsewhere in the world have some level of HALS documentation. The ASLA website has an interactive map of documented sites.
    • Our Chapter's student projects were acknowledged.
    • David Driapsa will lead a HALS workshop at Mallard Island in Minnesota June 25-July 1. Go to davidjdriapsa.com for contact information.
    • The Historic Landscape Institute will hold a workshop on Preserving Jefferson's Gardens and Landscapes at Monticello and the University of Virginia June 18-23.
    • The HALS office will move this spring to a better location nearer to other Department of Interior offices.

  5. Website renewal of HALSca.org

Many thanks to the ASLA Northern California Chapter for reimbursing Cate for the cost of renewing our website for the next two years.

  6. To-Kalon Vineyard status

Chris sent sample HALS documentation to Graeme MacDonald, to assist with his documentation of To-Kalon Vineyard in Napa County. MacDonald says that he is making good progress on the documentation, and looks forward to receiving feedback when his draft is complete.
