QUARTERLY MEETING
Wednesday, July 27, 2016 2:30PM | Conference Call
Chair: Chris Pattillo
Recorder: Janet Gracyk
Participants: Cate Bainton, Cathy Garrett, Chris Pattillo, Fred Rachman, Janet Gracyk, Melissa Mourkas, Sarah Raube
Minutes:
- HALS Heroes - Pattillo
Chris reported that five HALS Heroes projects were submitted.
Chris had made a presentation to a class at UC Berkeley and HALS documentation was one of three project types students could pick.
About half the class chose to do documentation.
Emphasis was on preparing a single sheet of drawings, with a short form.
Varying quality and levels of completion were achieved, but students were exposed to HALS and documentation.
Each of the five groups is being awarded the $1000 stipend.
Chris and PGA staff are working on bringing the drawings up to acceptable HALS standards.
- ASLA Board Meeting Annual Report - Pattillo
Following the annual report to the ASLA San Francisco Chapter board meeting our HALS group will again receive a $5000 stipend for HALS Heroes projects.
- 2016 HALS Challenge submissions - Pattillo
Chris Stevens reported that there have been 20 submissions from around the country for this year's HALS Challenge, as of 2 weeks ago.
(More are expected). This number exceeds last year.
- To Kalon Vineyard - Pattillo
Paul Dolinsky (Chief of HALS) has been in conversation with the descendants of To Kalon Vineyards in Napa, and they are interested in documentation of the vineyard, which they consider to be the oldest in the valley.
Our group will arrange a meeting with them for spring or fall of next year to discuss possibilities.
Chris Pattillo has been in contact with Cindy Heitzman at CPF to explore partnership options.
Melissa suggested the Public History Program at Sacramento State as a possible additional partner and or good source of historic information.
- HALS Liaison Report - Pattillo
As liaison to the ASLA HP-PPN HALS Subcommittee, Chris provided this report:
- "Professional Qualifications and Standards" changes to include landscape architects continues to inch forward.
- The ASLA LAM issue dedicated to NPS Centennial in 2016.
- Funding for the national HALS program will be discussed at an upcoming meeting between Nancy Somerville, executive vice president and CEO of ASLA, and Department of Interior top staff.
- HALS has received funding for two positions in Washington, DC. They are hiring a large-format photographer (over 4000 applicants!) and a historian.
- Chris Stevens reported HALS documentation was transmitted to the Library of Congress in June 2016 for the Pacific West Region. Nine entries were sent. Seven were from California.
- Plans for next meeting
Next meeting was tentatively set for September 24th at Western Hills Nursery in Occidental, hosted by Betsy Flack.
That date coincides with the annual meeting of the California Garden and Landscape History Society, so additional dates may be explored.
More to follow.
- Announcements
- Our chapter sent a letter regarding the Sacramento Old Capitol Cemetery. Carol Rowland helped draft the letter.
- Chris reported on having been contacted by others who are researching the Shinn Garden in Fremont and Shibata Garden in Hayward.

They have contacted our group to solicit interest from our members in serving on their board.
If anyone is interested, contact them via their website. (They also have a Facebook page.)
- Melissa reported on the upcoming TCLF Halprin tour in Sacramento, Sept. 18th.
The Capitol Towers Tour will be led by landscape architect (and HALSncc member) Melissa Mourkas and architect Melisa Gaudreau.
Capitol Towers will be demolished later this year.
