QUARTERLY MEETING

Saturday, May 7, 2016 10:30AM | Sacramento Tour

Tour Leaders: Gretchen Steinberg, Melissa Mourkas, Cathy Garrett

Participants: January Tavel, Les Tabata, Gretchen Steinberg, Mary and Michael Savage, Carol Roland, Fred Rachman, Chris Pattillo, Melissa Mourkas, Cathy Garrett, Jim and Betsy Flack, Anita Clevenger, Cate Bainton

The rain paused long enough for us to enjoy a pleasant tour in Sacramento.

  • 10:30AM -- Walking Tour of Capitol Towers
Many thanks to Gretchen Steinberg of Sacramento Modern and Melissa Mourkas for taking us on a tour of Capitol Towers and Garden Apartments. This mid-century redevelopment project is threatened by denser redevelopment. Steinberg led the effort to save the two-story Garden Apartments and surrounding landscape. Although the effort was unsuccessful, it raised awareness of mid-century modern design in Sacramento. Mourkas explained that it is eligible for National Register listing under Criteria A (at the forefront of mid-century urban renewal in Sacramento and California) and C (designed by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and architects Wurster Bernardi and Emmons, Barnes, DeMars and Reay).

  • noon -- Walking Tour of Capitol Park
Many thanks also to Cathy Garrett, who is a member of the Historic State Capitol Commission, for sharing her insights of Capitol Park with us, such as the recently-rediscovered entrance columns, threatened mid-century East Annex, historic trees, and former insectary.

  • 1:00 -- Lunch
A big thank you to Janet Gracyk for suggesting Cafeteria 15L. Carol Roland, former SHPO, and Anita Clevenger of Old City Cemetery joined us there for a delicious late brunch.

  • After Lunch
Optional self-guided tour of Sutter's Fort and/or McKinley Rose Garden.
