- Mission Challenge:
Chris Pattillo congratulated everyone on a job well done! Of the three awards available, our mission work earned two! First prize was awarded to Denise Bradley for her work on Mission San Francisco de Asís, San Francisco. Third prize went to the group effort of the HALS NCC for documenting sixteen of the twenty-one missions. Authors of those sixteen missions were April Phillips, Cate Bainton, Cathy Garrett, Chris Pattillo, Denise Bradley, Douglas Nelson, Elva Gomez, Holly Peterson, Janet Gracyk, Jill Johnson, Joseph Culberg-McClung, Kerri Liljegren, Larkin Owens, Libby Simon, Linda Van Fossen, Reed Dillingham, Robert Nicolais, Sarah Raube, and Theresa Brunner.
Five missions were not documented, however. Mission San Buenaventura, Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, Mission San Miguel Arcángel, and Mission Santa Bárbara Virgen y Mártir need to be done. Happily, Mission San Antonio de Padua will be getting full documentation done by the U.S. Army. Mission San Buenaventura has been documented by a group of students at California Polytechnic University under the direction of Assistant Professor Christy Edstrom O'Hara.
- Update on China Camp:
Chris Pattillo relayed Ellen's progress on China Camp. She is writing a draft narrative and expects to have it mostly finished by mid-September. The drawings are still in progress, and anyone interested in helping to advance this work would is invited to contact Jennifer de Graaf or Janet Gracyk to coordinate. Stephen Quiñones-Colón has completed the photography. Ellen paid $500 and our HALS group covered the remaining $1000 of his fee. In addition, Friends of China Camp are tasked with raising $1/2M in the next year to keep the park open and are trying to fund a 3-year contract to keep the park open.
- HALS Heroes:
Fred Reichman is working on his documentation for Rancho Los Alamitos.
There are still enough funds for two more projects at the moment.
The group considered Cate Bainton's idea of inviting photographers to participate in HALS Heroes which was well received. She, Frederica Drotos, and Chris Pattillo will be thinking further about this idea and how to structure it.
To apply for a stipend/grant, the applicant must submit a HALS short form for their chosen site. It is hoped that others come forward. Information on the Heroes program can be found on the Grants page of www.halsca.org
- State Park Closures and Funding Update:
Diane Einstein shared with the group updates on the challenges that our state parks face with regard to staying funded and raising enough funds to keep the parks open. She let us know that China Camp has signed a non-profit agreement, but they are still in need of funds as are most of the parks remaining open.
- Recognizing the title "Historic Landscape Architect":
Cathy Garrett reiterated the history of the title "Historic Landscape Architect". Our group decided to send a letter in the hopes of establishing a professional standard for "Historic Landscape Architect". Cathy, Janet Gracyk and Kerri Liljegren prepared a letter and submitted it to the NPS. We also coordinated with the CGLHS and ASLA passing along information so they could also submit letters.
- Leadership:
Our leadership change which took place last meeting is still in effect, but we still lack a secretary! At the August meeting, Jennifer de Graaf took the minutes and Sarah Raube offered to take the minutes at the upcoming November meeting. However, if anyone is interested in becoming the incoming secretary, that volunteer would be most welcome and appreciated!
Current Leadership:
- Jennifer de Graaf - Temporary Secretary and Past Chair.
- Cathy Garrett - Chair
- Janet Gracyk - Past Chair and Meeting and venue organizer
- Update on Berkeley City Club:
Chris Pattillo reported that Stephen Quiñones-Colón was hired by Berkeley City Club to do HALS photography. He shot 10 images. Chris shared proof sheets with the group. The drawings are finished. Celia McCarthy wrote the narrative which the Club will expand on, and all documentation is expected to be finished in time for their 100 year celebration.
- Announcements:
Cate Bainton announced that her measured drawing of San Francisco National Cemetery received an Honorable Mention in the 2012 Holland Competition,
and her photograph of the Carson, Pirie, Scott, and Company Store earned an Honorable Mention in the 2012 NHL Photo Contest.
