QUARTERLY MEETING

May 15, 2012 | PGAdesign Office, Oakland

Chair: Cathy Garrett
Recorder: Jennifer de Graaf
Attendees: Diane Einstein, Jennifer de Graaf, Cathy Garrett, Janet Gracyk, Larkin Owens, Ellen Johnck, Kerri Liljegren, Chris Pattillo

Mark your calendar for the next meetings: August 21, 2012 and November 14, 2012.

  1. Mission Challenge

Chris Pattillo gave an update on the Mission Challenge. At the time of the meeting, there were still three missions un-claimed for short form documentation in the Mission Challenge, and the deadline is coming up at the end of July. Still available at the time of the meeting were San Buenaventura (in Ventura), San Luis Rey de Francia (in Oceanside), and San Luis Obispo (in San Luis Obispo). Larkin Owens volunteered to do San Luis Obispo. Deadline is July 31, 2012. Chris Pattillo (pattillo@PGAdesign.com) is managing the list of sites, so if you are interested in doing one of the (now two) remaining sites and helping to document all of the California missions, please let her know!

  2. China Camp

Ellen Johnck presented her progress on China Camp. The available site maps were reviewed so that field note sheets can be compiled. There will be a trip out to the site for taking field notes on Saturday, June 30, 2012, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Please contact Ellen Johnck if you are interested in joining the effort to document this threatened resource. China Camp is one of 70 state parks slated for closure on July 1st.

  3. HALS Heroes

There are two candidates for HALS Heroes awards:

    1. Matt Bossler is documenting the Transamerica site. He contacted Chris Pattillo with a request for someone local to take a few additional site photos for him, Ellen Johnck offered to do this. It was agreed that the amount of effort Mr. Bossler has put into documenting his site is sufficient to hold his stipend in anticipation of his finished project.
    2. Fred Reichman submitted a nicely filled-out short form for his project (which is his official application) and we look forward to seeing more of his documentation. His stipend will be held in anticipation of his final project.
There are enough funds for two more projects at the moment.

To apply for a stipend/grant, the applicant must submit a HALS short form for their chosen site. It is hoped that others come forward. Information on the Heroes program and HALS can be found on www.halsca.org.

  4. State Park Closures and Funding Update

Diane Einstein shared with the group the financial challenges that Olompali faces and how the friends group is managing to take over care of the facility.

  5. Leadership Change

This meeting, we decided to go ahead and switch leadership roles despite the lack of an incoming secretary. If anyone is interested in taking notes at the meetings and distributing these minutes to the group, please let any of us know! No experience needed, all welcome!

Previous: Cathy Garrett - Minutes Secretary; Jennifer de Graaf - Chair; Janet Gracyk - Meeting and venue organizer

Current: Jennifer de Graaf - Minutes Secretary and Past Chair; Cathy Garrett - Chair; Janet Gracyk - Past Chair and Meeting and venue organizer

  6. HALS Short Form Demonstration

Chris Pattillo walked the group through a short form and sharing her favorite tips for understanding and filling-out each section. She also provided a link to a site that converts GIS data from Google Earth to the correct format.

  7. SHPO Update

Janet will contact SHPO to explore a meeting with SHPO in order to update them on our activities. The meeting may be in person or by phone. Janet will find out if the National Trust and CPF still have quarterly conference calls in which we might participate.

  8. CPF Conference

The recent CPF conference was held in Oakland this past month, and seems to have been a resounding success.

  9. Next Meeting(s)

We will be meeting 21 August at Lake Chalet restaurant in Oakland at 4pm to enjoy the scenery and their super popular Taco Tuesday!
