SUMMARY:ASLA-NCC JEDI Lunch with Leaders Designing for Neurodiversity Panel Discussion Part 1
DESCRIPTION:ASLA-NCC JEDI Committee is thrilled to host an inaugural two-part series panelist discussion on Designing for Neurodiversity. JEDI envisions these panelist discussions to be free-flowing conversations between designers and experts in the topic\, with some attendee participation. This panel discussion will be held online via Zoom. How can we not only support\, but also celebrate these invisible conditions often excluded from consideration in the built environment? These panels\, moderated by Michelle Jepsen + Yuki Igarashi of the JEDI Committee\, will provide insights from industry leaders and their experiences in designing for neurodiversity\, while holding space for open conversations for all. \nWe will launch the series with a webinar discussion\, embracing the diverse experiences of industry leaders from varied backgrounds. Our panelists include: \nToni Candanedo\nToni is a former desert dweller from Phoenix\, Arizona\, now residing in San Francisco. She is a Landscape Designer for SmithGroup San Francisco with 6 years of experience working within the healthcare\, higher education\, and workplace sectors. She has worked with clients\, contractors\, and her teammates to push designing for neurodiversity on projects currently under construction and in the design phase. \nApril Riehm\nApril recently graduated from Clemson University with MLA and a Master of City & Regional Planning. She’s interested in designing for equity and inclusion\, focusing her research on bridging the accommodation gap for ADHD students in higher education. \nMaci Nelson\nMaci Nelson is a neurodivergent landscape podcaster\, writer\, and designer in Cleveland\, Ohio. In 2020\, she received her Master of Landscape Architecture and created The Landscape Nerd podcast to advocate for interdisciplinary community building\, neuro-inclusive design principles\, and improving mental health in the profession. \nSarah Oppenhuizen\nAs the Director of Interiors for HOK’s San Francisco studio\, Sarah Oppenhuizen guides design teams and clients through all phases of project delivery. Her career includes design and management for complex domestic and international projects\, including corporate workplaces\, science and technology facilities\, medical centers\, government facilities and airports. \nRyan Boe\nRyan Boe is from the Midwest by way of Sioux Falls\, South Dakota. He attended the University of Nebraska – Lincoln from 2000 to 2006\, with degrees in architecture of a Bachelor of Science of Design in 2004 and Master of Architecture in 2006. In 2018\, Ryan became a proud father of his beloved twin identical boys. In 2020\, his wife and he noticed their sons were experiencing developmental delays and his sons were diagnosed with autism. He has seen first-hand how much our built environments need to change to be more inclusive. Ryan joined SmithGroup in 2022 as an Arch III in the San Francisco office’s workplace studio. \nCost: ASLA Members and Students Free\, Non-ALSA Member $25 \nThe zoom link for this virtual event will be shared upon registration. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:ASLA-NCC Landscape Design with Northern CA Plants Webinar
DESCRIPTION:When we plant local native plants\, we build buffets to feed clouds of butterflies and feed our ecosystem! \nNative plants look gorgeous in landscapes as varied as urban\, residential\, commercial and parks. Native plants evolved together on our varied geology\, in our varied weather (droughts and deluges) and are the foundation of our food web of pollinators\, birds and other wildlife. \nBenefits of native plants will be compared to introduced plants for butterfly caterpillars and pollen specialist bees. Each of California’s butterfly caterpillars evolved to eat a small set of native plant leaves\, as Monarch butterfly caterpillars co-evolved to eat only milkweed leaves. \nTools such as Calscape will be discussed to select and source local native plants for your projects. \nImpacts of adding native plants in public and private spaces can be seen in this San Francisco and San Mateo counties native ecosystems iNaturalist project\, which maps wild and planted local native plants and the butterfly caterpillars and some pollen specialist bees that use these native plants for food and habitat. \nImpacts of adding native plants in public and private spaces can be seen in this Contra Costa-Alameda counties native ecosystems iNaturalist project\, which maps wild and planted local native plants and the butterfly caterpillars and some pollen specialist bees that use these native plants for food and habitat. \nNative plant lists for specific uses are available for free on CNPS-YB’s biodiversity resources webpage. \nBio\nSusan Karasoff gardens in San Francisco’s clay and chert soil in former northern oak woodland. Susan is a member of the California Native Plant Society Yerba Buena chapter. Susan takes an “only the easiest plants survive” approach to gardening. Susan grows a buffet of native butterfly caterpillar\, pollen specialist bee\, edible\, shade tolerant and colorful native plants. \nCost: ASLA Members Free\, Non-Members $15 \nThe zoom link will be sent upon registration. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:ASLA-NCC Native Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:Lombard Reservoir to Francisco Park\nSan Francisco \nWhen we plant local native plants\, we build buffets to feed clouds of butterflies and feed our ecosystem! \nLombard Reservoir is located on clay and chert rock soil\, former northern oak woodland plant community. \nFrancisco Park is located on sandy soil\, former northern coastal dune scrub plant community. \nBio\nSusan Karasoff gardens in San Francisco’s clay and chert soil in former northern oak woodland. Susan is a member of the California Native Plant Society Yerba Buena chapter. Susan leads the Russian Hill Neighbors parks group that volunteers adding local native plants and weeding in Lombard Reservoir and Francisco Park. Susan takes an “only the easiest plants survive” approach to gardening. Susan grows a buffet of native butterfly caterpillar\, pollen specialist bee\, edible\, shade tolerant and colorful native plants. \nLocation\nMeet at Lombard Reservoir/George Sterling Park/Alice Marble tennis courts in front of the tennis courts\, Greenwich at Hyde\, prior to walking down to Francisco Park. Francisco Park has bathrooms\, a children’s playground and a dog park \nCost: ASLA Members Free\, Non-Members $10 \nREGISTER
