Since 1994, the Presidio Trust has worked with its partners the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, community partners, and thousands of community volunteers to transform the historic Presidio of San Francisco into our country’s first financially self-sufficient urban national park site. To achieve that result, the Presidio has wrestled with many of the major challenges faced by parks and protected areas in the 21st century – declining funding, privatization of public space, green historic preservation, climate change, species extinction, and equitable access. What strategies has the Presidio used to achieve its triple bottom line of people, planet, and performance? And has it struck the right balance?
